Working Together to Build Stronger Communities

Today, Canada recognizes National Housing Day, a powerful reminder that safe, affordable, and appropriate housing is essential to the health and strength of every community. For Mountain View Seniors’ Housing (MVSH), this day speaks directly to the work and purpose that guide us every day.

National Housing Day began in 2000, following the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Big City Mayors’ Caucus motion on November 22, 1998, declaring homelessness a national disaster. That declaration sparked a nationwide conversation, and a commitment that continues today.

Our Role as a Housing Management Body in Alberta

MVSH was created under a Ministerial Order and operates as a Housing Management Body (HMB) in Alberta. We are entrusted with managing public housing on behalf of our region, ensuring access, fairness, and responsible stewardship for all residents.

While our supportive living lodges are well known in our communities, MVSH provides far more than seniors’ housing. We proudly support a wide range of community members, including:

  • Families seeking safe, stable, and affordable options

  • Individuals navigating financial or life transitions

  • Seniors requiring everything from independent living to full supportive housing

  • Community members looking for a reliable place to call home

Housing needs look different for everyone. As an HMB, we are here to meet them.

Housing as the Foundation of Community Wellness

Stable housing is more than shelter. It is dignity, safety, connection, and opportunity. When people have a secure home, they can focus on their health, their families, their employment, and their future.

On National Housing Day, we recognize that public housing plays a vital role in strengthening communities across Alberta. MVSH works closely with municipalities, provincial partners, and community organizations that share the belief that housing is the foundation of community wellness.

Advocating for Accessible, Sustainable Housing

Demand for housing continues to rise across our region. Waitlists are growing. Economic pressures are affecting families and individuals. Seniors want to age close to home. These realities highlight why advocacy is essential.

MVSH continues to champion:

  • More affordable housing options for all ages

  • Reinvestment and upgrades to aging buildings

  • Collaborative government partnerships that support long-term sustainability

  • “Outside of the box” approaches that adapt to changing community needs

We believe public housing must remain strong, adaptable, and sustainable for generations to come. Although we remain hopeful for economic improvements and relief from the housing crisis, we know our role is to ensure all Albertans have a safe and welcoming place to call home. We are committed to advancing that mission every day.
