Gordon & Loretta’s Story
Love has a way of finding us when we least expect it, and for Gordon and Loretta, their story is serendipitous! Whether at an activity, watching entertainment, in the dining room, or simply sharing a quiet moment in the TV lounge, they are rarely seen apart.
Loretta moved to Mountain View County from Sherwood Park 11 years ago, purchasing a condo in Carstairs with her husband. Sadly, after only a month, she lost him. For eight years, she lived alone in that condo until the pandemic prompted her to move in with her daughter. After exploring many options, Loretta made Mount View Lodge her home in November 2023. She is a proud grandmother and great-grandmother, deeply connected to her family.
Gordon spent his first 70 years in British Columbia, serving in the navy before life led him to Alberta. After his wife passed away, he moved in with his sister in Olds. With his sharp memory, Gordon recalls the day vividly: “One day, she was vacuuming, and I said, ‘This is crazy, let’s move to the Lodge.’” In August 2023, they both made the transition to Mount View Lodge.

Then came February 23rd. Gordon remembers it to the minute: “At 1:47 PM, I met Loretta. She stepped off the elevator, and I thought, ‘Oh man!’” With a twinkle in his eye, he adds, “She was beautiful then, and she’s gorgeous now.” Loretta beams, thanking him quietly with a smile.
Loretta, too, noticed Gordon that day, sitting up “military stiff.” She recalls thinking, “There’s one who’s nice and in good shape.” Gordon chuckles at the memory. Yet, at the time, she thought little more of it. Their connection grew over time, exchanging hellos and attending the same activities. Gordon admits, “I’m sure after a while, she noticed I was gazing at her all the time.” Loretta laughs, teasing that Gordon got braver over time. Gordon playfully claims she was “playing a little hard to get, but it was all worthwhile!”
Like any relationship, there were moments of challenge, but through communication and understanding, they navigated them together. Now, Gordon joyfully declares, “It’s been smooth, wonderful sailing ever since.”

They have met each others’ families who embraced their relationship with open arms. Loretta describes Gordon as considerate, kind, and thoughtful—all qualities she would have looked for in a partner, had she been looking. “Which I wasn’t at the time,” she says with a grin, “but you never know how life works!”
In the early days, even the staff at the lodge noticed and arranged their seating in the dining room so that they could enjoy all their meals together! Their romance also extends beyond the walls of the lodge. “Oh, we go on dates!” Loretta enthusiastically exclaims. There is always something happening at the Legion on Saturday nights, and it makes for great date nights. They share coffee, attend church together, support each other at various appointments, and celebrate holidays with family. Though they live in separate suites, they are nearly inseparable. With a playful smile, Loretta adds, “We have our elevator moments.” Gordon chuckles, “What’s the word? Canoodling?” and Loretta confirms with a laugh “We get a smooch in every now and then.”
For Valentine’s Day, they have big plans—an evening at the Legion with a steak dinner, entertainment, and, if Gordon’s hip allows it, a dance with his sweetheart. “I can’t wait to dance more with Loretta after my surgery,” he says with excitement.

Their future remains unwritten, but the bond they share is undeniable. While marriage is a distant thought, they cherish their companionship as it is. Gordon gifted Loretta a beautiful ring, which she wears on her ring finger. “At 87 and 89, a wedding would be a big step,” she muses. They agree that, despite the lack of a piece of paper, their companionship is truly special. “That’s what really counts,” Gordon affirms.
Most assume they are already married, and Gordon sometimes refers to Loretta as his wife. “What the heck! Why not?” he laughs. Their relationship, unexpected yet deeply fulfilling, has changed their lives.
As Loretta reaches across the table to hold Gordon’s hand, they express gratitude for each other, their health, and the joy they’ve found. Gordon, once apprehensive about moving to the Lodge, now says he wouldn’t have it any other way.
As the camera captures their photo to accompany this story, Gordon pulls Loretta close and steals a kiss on her forehead. Their smiles—filled with warmth and love—are truly contagious.
This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate Gordon and Loretta’s heartwarming journey, a beautiful reminder that love knows no age and that companionship, laughter, and kindness are the greatest gifts of all.
